Friday is my usual day for filling the bird feeders, but I missed it yesterday as we took the KIA in for service. So, I was headed out there today with a full bucket of seed when I passed by the TV and noticed that the bands of rain passing from east to west over the state looked remarkably like the outer bands of a hurricane. Further checking on www.weather.com confirmed that, though Gustav is hundreds of miles away, the outer bands are passing over us now. Because Fay soaked us good, it will take very little water to raise the St. Johns river to flood stage, and warnings are out to secure things close to the river.
Meanwhile, Gustav is just getting to prime rev-up zone in the Gulf, and already is a Cat 4. That is to say, Gustav has moved beyond the "just fooling around" stage and gotten serious. We are not convinced that it will reach New Orleans, but we are glad to see they are preparing. One little twist, and Mr. Gustav could be at our doorstep.
So, I just took that bucket of seed back inside, and will consider bringing in the hummingbird feeders soon. Meanwhile, the kayaks and floaters and boaters continue to enjoy the river-occasional breeze and shower notwithstanding. Scent of grilled chicken has been breezing by since this morning. These are more signs that the river will soon revert back to a more peaceful home for us and other river critters. Happy Labor Day!
Marcia has just returned from the grocery. We are well supplied with food, batteries and LP gas. Still in wait and watch mode.
