Tally/Quincy/Monticello/Quitman

Gadsden County Courthouse-Quincy, Florida

It was Marcia's birthday today. We celebrated by doing the things we usually do on the ancestry road, and by having birthday dinner at a Mexican Restaurant with our friends, Carol and Pat. Today is Pat's birthday as well.

Our goal today was G G Granddaddy William Hagood's grave in Quincy. After some driving around, we went back to the nursery that was fenced and locked on the Sunday we last searched. We drove up to the office at about the same time as a young guy in a pickup. So, I asked if he worked here and told him I was looking for a cemetery. He knew right where it was and had us follow him. There was a cluster of old graves under oaks in the middle of acres of empty fields set up for wholesale nursery production.

The graves were of the Gregory family, so I knew it was the right spot. However, no headstone for William Hagood. There was one broken stone with the top missing. Who knows?

Because we couldn't find the bookstore we were looking for, we headed to the library. Marcia left with valuable Davis family information. I discovered a diary written by a doctor who had boarded with the Gregory family. Now I cannot wait to return to read it. I am sure we could happily live pretty much anywhere on the state line from Fernandina Beach to Alabama for a long time-uncovering the mysteries of famly in the libraries and cemeteries.

Back In Tally

Back in Tally

This time at the Tallahassee RV Park. Almost all pull thrus and all full up tonight. We called from the road early this afternoon. Glad we did. We are just a bit east of Tally-off of I-10 on US 90. Easy to get into town to the archives and easy to get to the interstate to get wherever else we want to go. We are here till Saturday. Two days at the archives and a day back to the cemetery search for Grandaddy Hagood in Quincy and on to Valdosta for dinner with Pat and Carol. Birthdays for both Marcia and Pat.

We had a nearly perfect day yesterday, considering that the West Florida Genealogical Library was closed. We headed out to Destin for a look at the factory outlet mall by way of the Camping World east of Gulf Breeze. Marcia is quite pleased with the sewer support that we bought. "Go with the flow," I'm all for it!.

On the way to the factory outlet mall, we stopped for lunch in Destin at the Destin something or other seafood restaurant. It is in the Marler house-1913-on the Destin Inlet. Marcia remembers coming to visit Mrs. Marler with her grandmother when Marcia was in her 20's. There were photos of the Destins and their children in the foyer to the restaurant. The food was excellent. We got the scallop baskets-the little sweet bay scallops-they were quite good. Marcia deemed the gumbo on par with hers. That's really good.

Since we are still on Eastern time, we are not hungry till late lunch when we cross the Apalachicola River. This gives us the advantage of finding the restaurants with the most cars and pickups parked in their lot, a pretty sure bet that the food is good. People vote with their tires.

The factory outlet stores are not what they used to be for me. These are new and shiny, no problem there, but most of them carry clothes that don't fit me and many with styles that don't fit me either. In this mall I was out for socks, and I was not disappointed. Socks Galore met my needs and then some. Pippi Longstocking can eat her heart out. I decided to check out the Eddie Bauer store as well, and came upon exactly the little wallet that works for me. Half price too. I bought one and Marcia was so impressed she sent me back to buy a back up. Big day at the mall for me!

Back home, while doing the laundry, I checked my phone mail and discovered that someone is using my credit card to order online. Apparently they made the mistake of ordering two days in a row and the second day alerted the company to call me before they processed the order. So, this morning was spent cancelling my credit card. Luckily I have a fall back plan and it seems to be working as we have two tanks of petrol and full bellies and just a few days before being back home.

We are recovering from 3D. I am not much for adventure movies, though my hat is off to this movie for holding my interest and amazingly making fashion statements on already decorated bodies with a string here and there.

I would consider Alice in Wonderland in 3D,but Marcia is thinking maybe not.

We also got some good results at cemeteries today. One that we passed up as well. After doing the Miller Cemetery and finding Charles Redd 1890-1892, we headed for the Magnolia Cemetery near the Milton airport. Very small airport. We drove around for awhile without any luck, and finally I decided to consult a man who was walking his dog. He said that there was an old cemetery behind his property in the woods and he wasn't sure we would find any remaining headstones if we could make our way through the growth. He gave us directions, but we decided to pass on this one. Seemed like one to walk away before we had to run.

The other cemeteries were fairly conventional with no wildlife or weedlife to challenge us. The last one with George Redd's grave was a perpetual care cemetery, so quite easy. Plenty of time to make it to the movie.

If the Swiss are reading...we are watching your countrypersons whup up in the Olympics. Clearly going downhill on snow works well for Swiss athletes. We hope you are enjoying it.

Temps here will be in the Florida winter reasonable range-low of 55F- hi of 69F Now, that's what we call winter!

Pensacola

I went along with Marcia today.  Something about meeting a man about a cemetery.  Turns out the man was Evan Strohl of Western Florida Genealogical Library, so she chatted while I jumped in the stacks like Brother Rabbit in the briar patch.  Soon I was touring the censes of St Augustine and Northeast Florida prior to 1821.  I had in mind to find names that could resemble the matriarch of the Higginbotham clan-Isabella Donna Incy.  I figure it wouldn't hurt to explore Spanish names that might sound like Incy, and I am convinced that she was Dona (where is the n-yay on this thing???)  Isabella, and I got a few candidates for Spanish names that might qualify, but no really big leads.  I did find the early grandfathers, or as it happens, abuelo Juan Braddock and Gullermo Christopher and Braddock.  Turns out that Spicer Christopher is the same in Spanish and in English.

Even though I spent my lunch money on photocopy, we went to lunch.  We were about to settle for the Chinese buffet on 9th when I spied the Panera.  Turns out that the Red Robin (blogophiles will remember our enthusiasm for Red Robin from our Pacific coast tour in 2007) was just down the mall from Panera, so we had some of our favorite burgers for lunch.  We were on a roll.  Our nearly swishy gay waiter advised us that Red Robin is coming to Tampa in August.  We are ready!  I advised him to go to Ft. Lauderdale.

Next stop was the Historical Society in the old district of Pensacola.  Marcia treated herself to a look at photos while I went out and took some.  Photo blog will follow.  I just have to say that Pensacola has the charm of so many southern cities-New Orleans, Savannah, Charlestown.  Quite lovely.

Our last stop of the day was the Pfeiffer Cemetery.  I have to say, without malace or snootiness and with considerable experience of cemeteries, that this is by far the worst cemetery I have ever visited.  It merits of photo blog of it's own.  Marcia said that Holly was really wanting to go here.  I say, "Your turn next.  I'm done!"  Evan and his staff warned us that they wouldn't go there and that we should take a gun or at least a rake handle.  The gate was impassable by car, so we left the car and hiked in-past the garbage piles and down the sandy road armed only with a camera.  Once in the cemetery gate, a weed whacker would have been nice.   Don't go there in the summer-really.  The mosquitoes will be the least of your worries.

Clearly we survived to tell about it.

Hagoods of Gadsden County

We did 4 out of 6 of the cemeteries on my list-not bad.

I have learned that geneology web sites might just have addendums and they would be worth reading before leaving home. Directions change-the names of businesses and farms can change, so we missed gg grandpa William Henry Hagood's grave, and he was one I really wanted to find. Guess there is something left for next trip.

I did find his sister-in- law's grave and many of her children. In this family, two brothers, William and Richard Hagood married two sisters, Julia and Susan Jeter. Their children are double first cousins. William died early-in his 50's. He is buried in a cemetery with lots of Gregorys-don't know the connection. His wife, Julia, lived long after him. I have her living in Jax on the last census I can find for her-1885. Her sister is buried at Old Philadelphia Presbyterian Church north of Quincy with several of her children. Susan's husband is buried at Anthony (Marion County) Cemetery where most of my Griffin ancestors are buried. Apparently they did not ship.

So now I have work to do editing photos and pasting/posting to my tree. That is a fun part for me-always reveals something I didn't know and often leads to the next questions about that person or family.

However, today we are headed for Marianna for a visit with Aunt Alva. Short trip-ideally easy trip as well.

Back to the Beach

It was a red letter day for Stella. Beach X2. We enjoyed it as well and I got my credit card back.

Lunch/dinnah was excellent. After I got my credit card, we celebrated with more seafood at Boss Oyster and headed for the cemeteries of Apalachicola. There were quite a few more Sharits to collect, and we did.

Stella got a long invigorating beach run at Carabelle Beach. We have noted that there is a nice RV park right across the street and plan to check them out sometime. Stella could get long beach runs and we could make it to Boss Oyster very easily. Sounds like a plan.

We are at the mercy of RV park internet connections. Though this park has two, we often get bumped. I'm hoping my blog entry will post. Some of my inquiries and some of my ancestry additions have poofed.

I am preparing for our visit to Gadsden County and Bainbridge, Georga tomorrow. There are new Hagoods appearing on my radar-ideally I'll be able to get to their cemeteries and photograph them. I'm very excited about finding gg grandfather William Hagood. Apparently the cemetery is in a plant nursery. Hope we can find it.
