Hilda held a dinner party last night at one of her favorite restaurants-now one of ours. We feel so at home in this restaurant where the decor is beautiful and functional and the ambiance is welcoming.
The Chef visits tables often. She is a former nun and current lesbian restauranteur chef. Her Spanish sounds like "clacka, clacka, clacka" to us, but she has no difficulty being understood.
The long table next to us was celebrating the birthday of a 19yo boy/man. We are guessing that the great grandmother, grandmother and possibly her sister, and the mother and possibly her sister, and several contemporary cousins were in attendance. Everyone was having a good time. There were party crowns, and Chef presented the birthday boy with a Chef hat upon which he perched his crown. At the end of a sumptious meal, Chef came out strumming a guitar (for noise only) followed by her staff with all the instruments of Puerto Rico. Everybody was singing, and a dance was required of the great grandmother and the birthday boy.
Next, Chef moved to our table, where a dance was required of Hilda and Hermon. Chef was pretty exhausted after all of this and chose to sit with us for awhile. She and Hilda are old friends (though not in the convent together). I think Hilda knows every lesbian in Puerto Rico.
La Comida: Marcia got a red snapper in the most wonderful cream sauce-it had the flavor of peppers. I got Mofungo served in a pretty big wooden mortar. The crusty plantinos made a lining in the mortar, and sliced sweet sauced flank steak filled the middle. It was my first Mofungo, and it was quite fine. Islia got El Capitan-a crusted and fried fish-also very good. There were plenty of tostones and some ripe plantains all smashed together called "fufu" Check out the web site for the flavor of the restaurant. http://www.pasionporelfogon.net/e-index1.php
El Fogon is the stove-more like a bread baking oven in the backyard. If you are in PR, definitely head to Fajardo to this restaurant.
