When you are in Redding, California, this is the place you must eat! I had made the statement at a Thompson family dinner at a Mexican Restaurant that it is fine to fill up on the chips and salas before the meal because you can take what you don't eat home and have a wonderful lunch or dinner the next day. DON'T do that at Pio Loco's. The food is superb.
You may have been able to take home Marcia's steak fajita's, though she didn't, but my Relleno Cabo was so perfectly light crispy fried that it would not have stood the test of time. They have traditional Mexican favorites at reasonable prices but really kicked up several notches. There is also an "upscale" dinner menu. Our dinners beer and sangria (x2) was $50. If you go for lunch, be sure you have some siesta time....Generally we get on the road about 10am. It was a cool start for Redding. We had temps as high as 107F during our stay here.

I have been seeing RV's towing boats on the highway. Now I know why. Apparently people take their RV, or rent a houseboat and tow their boat and spend some time escaping the heat by floating around Lake Shasta. If the water is as cold as the Sacramento River, which is fed by the snowmelt from Mt. Shasta, these waterskiers have incentive to stay upright.
Eventually, Mt. Shasta showed herself, and she is looking fine.
There is a cindercone neighbor to Mt. Shasta. I am learning about these volcanic formations. Our resident geologist is chomping at the bit to get to Powell's Books in Portland to pick up some roadside geology books so she can tell us more.
Soon we will know the story behind formations like these.
However, our resident geologist and RV driver is not fond of driving up and down these formations. The 6%ers make her nerves bad. So, though the trip was relatively short, it was stressful. We were glad to see the less than resort like RV park right next to I-5.
Later that evening, Our Mother (Nature) gave us quite a show. Since we were at the pool/hot tub, I missed good shots of the sunset, but managed these post pool. Though it is hard to see the colors, the pink wand touching earth is a rainbow.
Tomorrow, Crater Lake.
